- Cotyledons cordate.
- Leaves entire, ovate or triangular, irregularly dentate.
- Height: 30-120 cm.
- Stem with stiff and divergent branches.
- The lower leaves in rosette ; cauline leaves runcinate. The upper lanceolate, slender, amplexicaul. Leaves very different in shape.
- Flowers blue, ligulate, in terminal or axillary heads (1-3).
- Fruits : achenes crowned with very small pappus-like scales. Seeds ( 2-3 mm), obovate, from yellow to light-brown until black.
- Leaves and roots bitter, stomachic, depurative and slightly laxative. Dried roots are used as coffee (chicory). Rare in crops.
- Risk of confusion with the species of Crepis at seedling stage.
