- Cotyledons : oblong, glabrous, with conspicuous central vein, petiole and hypocotyl reddish.
- First two leaves opposite, lanceolate, dentate, with 2 lobes more conspicuous at base, pinnately veined, glabrous; tuft of white hairs at the intersection of the petiole on the stem.
- Height : 30-200 cm.
- Stem : erect, hispid, branched and often reddened above.
- Leaves : petiolate and opposite; the basal simple and lanceolate, the other divided into 3 lanceolate segments 7-10x1-3 cm the lateral, 9-12x2-4 cm the central, with dentate margin and sharp apex; the central segment on a lengthened petiole up to 1/2 as long as the blade.
- Inflorescence : capitula 2-4 cm in diam. with short, membranaceous non radiating scales ; disc-florets yellow.
- Fruit : achenes blackish with erect bristles on the edge and tilted on the two awns.
- Risk of confusion with: Bidens tripartita L., Bidens cernua L.
- Biological type : annual.
