- Cotyledons : Lanceolate, at least 10x as long as broad, apex acuminate usually broader in middle than end, more or less long-stalked, gradually narrowing into stalk, otherwise sessile.
- Leaves : Deeply lobed, outline ovate to triangular.
- Height : 10-150 cm.
- Stem : erect, tubulous, glabrous or sparcely hairy, green-yellowish, often branched at base.
- Leaves : sessile or subsessile, opposite ; blade 4-11x0.5-1 cm linear or linear-lanceolate, entire or with sharp-pointed and spaced out teeth.
- Inflorescence : capitulum 2 cm in diameter, disk shaped, on a peduncle recurved downwards at maturity (hence 'nodding'); outer bracts leaf -like, 1-2 cm and spreading; disk-florets without ligules or small (1 cm) and oval ; ray -florets yellow.
- Fruit : achenes 3-4-angled prominent at the apex and prolonged upwards into awns provided with bristles turned downwards.
