- Shoot rolled, sheath rounded on the back.
- Leaf blade near 30 cm long x 7 cm broad, tapered at the apex.
- Ligule membranous, truncate and toothed, auricles absent.
- Height: 25-170 cm. Plant tufted.
- Tillers erect.
- Leaves flat shiny or nearly glabrous ; ligule 2-7 mm acute or obtuse.
- Inflorescence pyramid-shaped panicle -like, 20-30 cm long, with branches spreading in different directions or more or less lying in the same way.
- Spikelets 18-30 cm long, with 2-3 florets articulated on the rachis. Glumes veined subequal always longer than the floral-glumes. 2-3 lemmas with terminal awns (1-13 mm long).
- Fruit : caryopsis separated from each other when mature.
- Risk of confusion with Avena fatua L.
