- Cotyledons elliptical, with rounded tip, more or less petiolate.
- Entire leaves, elliptical to ovate with entire margin.
Height: 30-100 cm
- Stem with numerous basal branches, hairy, rose coloured.
- Leaves ovate with distinct hairy petiole, often coloured, first ones opposed then alternate. Indented at top of lamina, terminated with mucron. Margin of lamina hairy.
- Flower regrouped in long terminal spike green yellowish fitted at base of axillary coalescent spike, perianth of 5 linear pieces, spatulate, emarginate with pointed margin.
- Fruit: dehisces transversely.
- Triazine resistant populations exist in France, Austria, Hungary and Canada.
- Risk of confusion with: Amaranthus hybridus L., Amaranthus cruentus L.
