- Shoot rolled, cylindrical leaf sheath.
- Leaf blade 20-50 times longer than wide, leaf more or less hairy.
- Membranous, dentate ligule, short auricles.
- Height 30-40 cm. Cespitose.
- Glabrous leaves or hairy. Leaf sheath's surface is always strigosed.
- Inflorescence spike distichous, less than 3 cm and sterile at top.
Lower glume of basal spikelet 7-8 mm x 5-6 mm, with 3-5 long awns; the lemma awns nearly as long as those of glume. Shedding at every node of basal fertile spikelet.
- Fruit: caryopsis.
Risk of confusion with seedling stage of all other species of Aegilops genus.
