- Cotyledons very narrow, elongate (> 10 times longer than broad).
- Leaves entire, elliptic or ovate, regularly dentate.

- Leaves lengthened, deeply lobed, 3-5 lobes elongate, green above grey tomentose beneath, strong yellow lobed spines at the base of each leaf -stalk.
- Flowers greenish, male heads globose, female heads 2-flowered.
- Fruit ellipsoidal, 10-15 mm, covered with short hairs and yellow slender hooked spines. 2 terminal unequal and obscure beaks for each fruit.
