- Cotyledons very narrow, elongate (> 10 times longer than wide).
- Leaves entire, elliptic or ovate, regularly dentate.
- Height: 30-65 cm. Plant with a stout stock.
- Flowering stem robust, angled, not spiny near the leaves.
- Leaves long-stalked, with small rough hairs, greyish beneath. Blade usually triangular in outline and broadly cuneate at base or obcordate, 3-5 angled and toothed lobes.
- Flowers greenish monoecious, the male spherical, the female (1 or 2) enclosed in a spiny involucre.
- Fruit ovoid, circa 12-15 mm long x 6-8 mm broad, covered with small hairs and straight, hooked spines (except near the apex); fruit 2-beaked, equal, acute and not hooked beaks.
