- Leaves pinnately divided.

- Stem simple or branched, climbing and pubescent.
- Leaves with 3 to 7 pairs of leaflets a terminal branched tendril ; stipules with dark-coloured nectary, and stipules are usually dark-blotched beneath.
- Flowers purple or crimson more or less purplish, 2-3 cm, 2 rarely solitary on very short peduncles. Calyx with subequal teeth, drooping when ripe.
- Fruit : pod lengthened, nearly cylindric, 5-10 x 40-60 mm, short-haired, brown, spreading or erect; broad and compressed seeds.
- Very good quality as fodder plant; used as green manure.
