- Leaves entire, elliptic or ovate, regularly dentate.

- Stems prostrate, rooted in their upper part.

- Leaves opposite except bracts, entire or slightly dentate. Very short stalks.

- Flowers white or whitish, blue-striped in relatively loose racemes more or less lengthened. Pedicels longer than the calyx and shorter than the leaves.

- Fruit ripe broader than long, emarginate apex, slightly longer than the persistent calyx.

- Plant bitter, astringent and a stimulant. Rare in crops.
