- Leaves sessile, relatively thin, green white-blotched above, white-hairy beneath, middle leaves decurrent. Blades oblong -lanceolate, sinuate -dentate or spiny pinnatifid.

- Flowers crimson in head solitary terminal on stems or on lengthened branches; corolla -tube serrate at the apex; semi-spherical involucre.

- Fruit : achene brown 4-angled, shining with a white feathery pappus.

- Rare in crops.

- Biological type: annual.
