- Leaves relatively broadly linear, semi-amplexicaul.
- Flowers purple-reddish or purple-grey, shorter than the involucre. Involucre of 5-12 bracts on 1 row.
- Fruit ripe greyish, outer with small spines or more or less acute tubercles on sides, inner smooth; the lower part of fruits is swollen and short.
- Plant cultivated for roots and young shoots eaten as green salad. High concentration of inulin in the roots.
