- Cotyledons elliptic or ovate, rounded tip, more or less stalked.
- Leaves pinnately divided.

- Leaves opposite, with 5-8 ovate leaflets in pairs, on 2 rows, without terminal leaflet ; stipules very small.
- Flowers yellow, small, solitary, on short peduncle, at the axil of leaves or forks; 5 ovate sepals, 5 petals 1/2 time longer than the sepals. 10 stamens and 1 very short style.
- Fruit : capsule 5-angled opening in 5 spiny cells; 2-3 seeds in each cell which droops without opening when ripe.
- Plant tonic, astringent, vulnerary, aperitive, used against disorders of eyes.
