- Cotyledons elliptical to oval, with rounded tips, with or without petioles.
- Entire leaves elliptical to oval, regularly dentate.
- Height: 10 to 40 cm. Plant softly hairy with an unpleasant odour.
- Stems upright ascendant, branchy, very leafy.
- Leaves dark green above, lighter below, always petiolate, opposite, oval triangular, pinnatifid, segments linear to oblong. bracts (superior) pinnatifid. Hair very short, grey-green on the lower surface.
- Flowers pinkish purple pedicellate, axillary, 3 to 8 in half-whorls along the branches ; calyx hairy glandular, campanulate, with a network of veins, with triangular to needlel-like teeth, equally sized; corolla externally hairy.
- Fruits : achenes divided into 4 brown nutlets, lightly reticulate.
- Plant sometimes cultivated as ornamental plant. The leaves and the flower heads have tonic, antifebrile porperties, vermifuge, bitter and sudorific.
