- Cotyledons elliptic or ovate, rounded tip, more or less stalked.

- Leaves entire, elliptic or ovate, irregularly dentate.

- Height: 10-60 cm.

- Scape erect or ascending, with a single head.

- Leaves all radical confined in a basal rosette, glabrous or glabrescent, attenuate at base, runcinate, pinnatifid or pinnatisect, with lanceolate -triandular segments. Whitish latex present.

- Flower yellow. Involucre with bracts entire or denticulate, more or less horn tipped, the outer bracts spreading or reflexed. - Fruits : achenes greyish spiny tip, equalling or shorter than the beak ; pappus white, more rarely gingerish.

- Plant with an abundant nectar and eaten as green salad, bitter, used against disorders of stomach and eyes, aperitive, diuretic. This aggregate encloses plants very variable in form.

- Biological type: perennial.
