- Shoot rolled, leaf sheath terete.
- Leaf blade 2-5 times longer than broad, leaf glabrous.
- Ligule membranous toothed, auricles absent.
- Height: 50-200 cm. Plant glabrous with a creeping stock.
- Stem stout, erect, with pubescent nodes.
- Leaves 1-2 cm broad, flat, scabrous, with a midvein thick, whitish and not prominent; dense appressed basal hairiness. After the 3-leaved stage, the leaf sheath becomes flattened.
- Inflorescence : panicle purplish or greenish, elongate, pyramid-shaped, constricted at the end, with rachis and branch glabrous and dark. Spikelets sterile lanceolate, awnless. Spikelets fertile oblong -lanceolate, hairy, with a lemma bifid, awnless or with an awn twice longer than the spikelet.
- Fruits : caryopsis ovate or oblong.
- Plant cultivated as fodder plant. Roots are depurative and fruits are diuretic.
