- Leaves entire, ovate or deltoid, irregularly dentate.

- Height: 20-80 cm.

- Stem hollow, few-branched.

- Basal leaves in rosette, light-green; later alternate, oblong, sinuate -dentate, pinnatifid or often entire and lanceolate, strongly spiny, amplexicaul with 2 broad, rounded and twisted auricles.

- Flowers yellow; involucre smooth or with few glandular hairs, present on peduncles.

- Fruits : achenes not warty, smooth or with some very short hairs on the border.

- Populations exist which are resistant to triazines in France.

- Biological type: annual.
