- Cotyledons lengthened, spoon-shaped.
- Leaves entire, ovate or deltoid, irregularly dentate.

- Basal leaves in rosette, notched, lobed, with downward teeth, spiny but not prickly, glabrous, pinnatisect or pinnatifid, with few and distant segments. Cauline leaves amplexicaul with short and rounded auricles.
- Flowers yellow in few heads, long-peduncled in corymb, peduncles and involucre are glandular-hispid. Plant dioecious.
- Fruits : achenes brown when ripe, longitudinal and elliptic in outline, transversely wrinkled.
- The flow of the latex from the broken stem distinguishes Sonchus spp. from other thistles; the roasted root is used as a substitute for chicory; melliferous plant.
