- Cotyledons elliptic or ovate, acute at the apex, sessile.
- Leaves entire, elliptic or ovate, margins entire.
- Height: 100-200 cm. Small tree glabrous or pubescent.
- Stem erect with herbaceous branches, somewhat scrambling, terete.
- Leaves ovate, apex acuminate, often cordate at base, entire. Upper leaves entire or 3-lobed, with 2 shorter lateral segments.
- Flowers purple or white, large, in umbellate forked and many-flowered cymes, long-stalked; calyx green, small, short-lobed; corolla with revolute lobes with 2 basal green blotches; yellow anthers.
- Fruits : red and ovoid berry.
- Plant ornamental with horticultural varieties. The bark is bitter and the wood is sweet. Stems are sudorific and their decoction is depurative; leaves are used for resolutive cataplasms and as a tranquilliser. Poisonous plant because of the existence of a toxic alkaloid: solanin.
