- Cotyledons: elliptical to oval with orbicular tip (±) dented.
- Height 20 to 60 cm. glabrous or pubescent, glaucous very variable.
- Lower leaves in loose rosette, fewer leaves at base. Leaves opposite, oval or lanceolate, glabrous with the principle vein pronounced, blue-green.
- Flowers white, seldom rose; in branched clusters, few per cluster; bracts; small scarious; calyx inflated, bladder-like glabrous, with 20 veins, reticulate, often reddish. Big petals, the blade deeply bifid with 2 coronal scales or swellings at its base.
- Fruits: capsules, ± broadly ovoid; carried by a glaborous carpophore.
- Young shoots can be eaten taste is a cross between asparagus and peas. Sometimes cultivated as ornamental plants. Root used instead of soap.
