- Height: 20-40 cm. Plant green, hairy, with a slender root.

- Stems 4-angled, numerous, prostrate, spreading, slender, stiffly hairy, scabrid.

- Leaves 6 in whorls, ovate -lanceolate, mucronate, very scabrid.

- Flower pink-lilac to purplish, in small terminal heads enclosed in an involucre much longer than the adnate basal bracts. Calyx with 6 deep awl -like teeth, erect, accrescent ; corolla funnel-shaped with a lengthened spreading 4-lobed tube ; 4 prominent stamens.

- Fruits dry obovoid, shortly rough, 2 adnate carpels each one crowned by 3 persistent calyx-teeth.

- Plant of which roots have dyeing red property.

- Biological type: annual.
