- Shoot folded, leaf sheath flattened.
- Leaf blade 2-5 times longer than wide, leaf more or less hairy.
- Ligule membranous, ciliate or surrounded with a ring of hairs, auricles absent.
- Height: 30-80 cm. Plant tufted, glabrous.
- Stem erect or ascending, rough above.
- Leaves green, 5-10 mm broad, longitudinally amplexicaul, margins scabrid, elongate, acute apex. Leaf sheath ciliate, more or less markedly hairy, very strongly flattened.
- Inflorescence : spike -like panicle, 5-10 cm long, cylindric, interrupted at base and pseudo-whorled, green, very scabrid up and down and hooked; bristles with reflexed teeth. Spikelets elliptic, obtuse ; very unequal glumes, the upper equalling the flower ; fertile floral glumes minutely rugose.
