Biological type: Perennial
- Shoot folded, leaf sheath flattened.
- Leaf blade 2-5 times longer than broad, leaf more or less hairy.
- Ligule membranous, ciliate, surrounded with a ring of hairs, auricles absent.
- Height: 20-120 cm. Plant tufted.
- Stem scabrous.
- Leaves narrow, circa 2 mm. Hairiness of the upper side of the blade only on margins. Midvein narrow (except at the base).
- Inflorescence 3-4 mm in diameter. Spikelets circa 2.5 mm, globose with an upper glume shorter than the wrinkled fertile floret of which floral glumes are leathery, opaque and pitted. Hairs tawny or gingerish, thick, scabrous, few and only on branches.
- Plant recently introduced in France, frequent in Corsica, (native of tropical and subtropical America). Rare in crops.
