- Cotyledons spatulate, oblong, attenuate into a short stalk.

- Leaves entire, elliptic or ovate, regularly dentate.

- Stem with spreading branches.

- Lower leaves in rosette, dentate, cut; the other pinnatisect. Upper leaves opposite deeply divided into segments often narrow with a longer terminal lobe.

- Flowers pink or lilac, radiate, 5 unequal-lobed, in flat heads. Fruiting heads ovoid, subglobose or oblong. Receptacle conical with linear flakes, involucel campanulate 8-furrowed.

- Fruit crowned with an obscure involucel twisted inside.

- Biological type: annual or perennial.
