- Cotyledons auriculate.

- Leaves pinnate, 3-foliolate ( first leaf sometimes simple ).

- Height: 20-60 cm.

- Stem angular, erect or ascending.

- Leaves lower with 9-25 ovate leaflets ; rounded in outline and crenulate margins. Upper leaves with less numerous leaflets, longer, acute apex and deeply serrate. Leaflets on short, small, secondary stalks.

- Flowers greenish in globose head. Calyx alone around the flower ; sepals ovate, green-purple or red-brownish. Spikelets short, dense, often globose, red-brownish or purple-pinky.

- Fruit ovoid or subglobose, relatively large with ridges, on the angles: thick, blunt, irregularly and deeply sinuate -crenate, bristly sides with obtuse tubercles as high as the ridge. 2-3 indehiscent carpels.

- Plant cultivated in vegetable gardens: leaves are eaten as green salad. Fodder plant. Plant astringent, aromatic, used against catarrh.

- Biological type: perennial.
