- Cotyledons elliptic or ovate, rounded tip, more or less stalked.
- Leaves entire, elliptic or ovate, regularly dentate.
- Height: 20-60 cm. Plant glabrous or pubescent.
- Stem erect, flexuous, with numerous, stiff, spreading and forward-directed branches.
- Lower leaves in rosette ; blade obtuse at apex, obcordate at base, cut margins, panduriform. Cauline leaves relatively small, ovate and acute. Ochreas present.
- Flowers greenish, in few-flowered whorls, all spreading, in long lax and slightly leafy racemes ; short pedicels, jointed near the base.
- Fruit with fruiting valves reticulate, ovate-deltoid, with an oblong wart, stiff lanceolate teeth on margins.
- Plant of which root is slightly astringent, diuretic and aperitive.
