- Cotyledons elliptic or ovate, rounded tip, more or less stalked.
- Leaves entire, elliptic or ovate, regularly dentate.
- Height: 50-100 cm. Plant glabrous or pubescent.
- Stem erect, robust, with ascending branches.
- Leaves lower in rosette, dark-green. Later leaves stalked, cordate at first ovate-rounded, then ovate, dentate and sinuate on margins, obtuse or acute apex. At the beginning, leaves twice rolled like a cigar on their underside and enclosed in a membranous and whitish sheath (ochrea ).
- Flowers greenish, in many-flowered whorls, relatively closed, leafless or lower with 1 leaf, in lengthened racemes ; peduncles jointed just below the mid-point.
- Fruit with reticulate fruiting valves, ovate-deltoid, the outer tuberculate, all with awled margins.
- Plant associated with rotation of fodder plants and fields in temporary fallow. Aperitive, depurative, diuretic and slightly astringent roots.
- Biological type: perennial with rhizomes.
