- Height: 5-30 cm. Plant glabrous, often reddish.

- Stem slender, ascending or erect, simple or few-branched.

- Lower leaves in rosette. Leaves small, stalked, ovate-rhomboidal or lanceolate, entire, attenuate at base; sheath (ochreas) white, shining, 2-acute-lobed.

- Flowers greenish, 2-3 whorled in simple, slender, lax nearly leafless racemes ; lower racemes with a basal bract.

- Fruit with a clavate and recurved fruiting peduncle. Fruiting valves leathery, lanceolate, deltoid, with thick and often hooked teeth on margins (3-5 on each side).
