- Stem prostrate or erect, armed with prickles.

- Leaves large, with 3-5 coarsely toothed leaflets, stipules joined to the stalk, bristly, sometimes red-brown-tinged.

- Flowers white, pink or red, solitary or in cymes. Calyx with 5 broadened teeth, not clasping the carpels.

- Fruits : blackberries reddish or blueish, fleshy, with a slight acid taste. Fruit easily divided in druplets. Seeds ovate spreading, 2-3 mm, reticulate.

- Very numerous species in the genus Rubus.

- Biological type: perennial with stolons.
