- Cotyledons remain below the ground (hypogeal germination).
- Leaves entire, linear, acute at the apex.
- Height: 30-150 cm.
- Stem ascending or diffuse, with branched and stoloniferous stems from the rhizome. Stems with long 4-angled hooked spiny inter-nodes. Plant with yellow-orange stock.
- Leaves obovate to lanceolate, whorled, glabrous, leathery, with cartilaginous and prickled margins.
- Flowers yellow in cymes.
- Fruits : fleshy and black berries. Just a single carpel gives a fruit.
- Plant protected in the department of Haute-Vienne (decree 01/09/89).[France]. Root used for red dyeing.
