- Cotyledons elliptic, clavated tip, more or less stalked.
- Leaves entire, lanceolate, more or less dentate.
- Height: 10-60 cm. Plant very variable.
- Stems slender, numerous, very often spreading, glaucous, branched.
- Leaves elliptic-lanceolate, alternate, with a membranous sheath lacerate at the apex (ochrea ), rolled cigar-like above. Short petiole. Early development of cotyledon and axillary buds.
- Flowers white or pink, sessile, isolated or 2-4 axillary of leaves. 7 stamens and 3 free styles.
- Fruit 3-angled, brown, dull, lengthwise striate, when ripe not exceeding the calyx circa 2.5 mm long.
- Plant astringent, vulnerary and hemostatic. Seeds emetic and purgative. Leaves used as infusion in intestinal disorders. Populations exist which are resistant to triazines in U.S.A. and Poland.
