- Cotyledons lengthened, spoon-like.
- Leaves entire, ovate -deltoid, irregularly dentate.
- Height: 30-60 cm.
- Stem erect, branched, hispid, covered with short rigid hairs which are tuberculate at the base, trifid and minutely hooked at the apex.
- Leaves lower obovate, toothed margin, narrowed into a winged stalk with rigid tubercle-based hairs. Cauline leaves sessile, amplexicaul.
- Flowers yellow in numerous heads. Outer bracts, large, shorter than the inner ones, cordate, broad and not spreading.
- Fruit : achenes yellowish or reddish, 5-7 mm long, transversally wrinkled, abruptly ended into a slender beak as long as the achene. Pappus of white feathery hairs.
- Plant of which bitter leaves are sometimes eaten as vegetables. Plant vermifuge, the sweet and mucilagineous root is resolutive.
- Risk of confusion with Echium plantagineum L. (at seedling stage), Picris hieracioides L..
