- Shoot rolled. Leaf sheath rounded on the back, appressed to the culm, glabrous.

- Ligule up to 4 mm long, white, narrowing into little points, margin sinuate or entire. Auricles absent.

- Height: 40 to 150 cm. Loosely to densely tufted.

- Culms erect or ascending from a bent base, few vegetative shoots, basal internodes very short and usually swollen or bulbous.

- Leaves glabrous, green or greyish-green. Blade finely striate at the base.

- Inflorescence: Dense spike-like panicle, cylindrical. Spikelets one flowered. Glumes are not joined, keeled, keels fringed with stiff spreading white hairs, and forming at the tip a rigid rough awn.

Species varies greatly.
