- Shoot rolled, leaf sheath terete.

- Leaf blade 20-50 times longer than broad, leaf glabrous.

- Ligule membranous, toothed, leaf blade with an undulate base.

- Stem erect simple or branched. Vertical tillage.

- Leaf blade 4-7 mm broad, lengthily attenuate and acute. Sheath of the upper leaf swollen and pinkish.

- Inflorescence : spikelets in a short and ovoid spike -like, often very distant from the upper sheath. Glumes nearly ovate, very shortly pointed. Floral glumes hairy.

- Fruit : caryopsis.

- Rare in crops.

- Risk of confusion at seedling stage with the other species of Phalaris .
