- Shoot rolled, leaf sheath flattened.

- Leaf blade 2-5 times longer than broad, leaf more or less hairy.

- Ligule membranous, toothed, auricles absent.

- Height: 50-150 cm.

- Leaf with a smooth sheath in the upper part, sometimes swollen. Blade 10-25 cm x 4-12 mm, glabrous, smooth, with few isolated basal hairs.

- Inflorescence complex, very irregular: raceme of spike -like unilateral racemes. In each raceme spikelets in pairs are arranged in rows along one side of the flattened rachis.

- Fruit : spikelet falling entire when ripe, without the lower glume and without the upper floral glume of the sterile floret.

- Plant native in South America. Rare in crops.

- Biological type: perennial with stolons.
