- Cotyledons very narrow and short (few mm long).
- First leaves linear to rounded, then pinnate.
- Height: 10-40 cm. Plant pubescent.
- Stem simple or branched, erect or ascending.
- Leaves lower in rosette. Once or twice pinnately divided, with few lanceolate and usually silky segments. Cauline leaves sessile. Whitish latex.
- Flowers red-scarlet, relatively small. Petals sometimes black-blotched at base.
- Fruit : long-clavate capsule, 4-6 rays on the topped disk of the fruit. Capsule obscurely ribbed, silky-hairy on the upper part.
- Whole plant poisonous - especially the fruit.
