- Shoot rolled, leaf sheath terete.
- Leaf blade 20-50 times longer than wide, leaf more or less hairy.
- Ligule membranous, truncate, auricles absent.
- Height: 60-100 cm. Plant tufted, with appressed and rooted stolons.
- Leaves light-green. Colourless and thickened base of the blade.
- Inflorescence : large panicle with numerous very divided branches arranged in distant whorls. Long pedicels with solitary spikelets (less than 4 mm long) with a shorter awn. One floret concealed by large glumes. Lemma relatively coriaceous and shining, very clasping.
- Fruit : shining seed, without rhachilla, compound of caryopsis narrowly enclosed by the floral glumes, rounded on the back.
- Plant used in Africa as fodder. Rare in crops.
- Biological type: perennial with stolons.
