- Cotyledons elliptic, clavated tip, more or less stalked.

- Leaves palmate.


Adult plant snapshot Adult plant:

- Height: 20-40 cm.

- Stem: erect, angular, simple or branched. Plant with a yellow root orange at first.

- Leaves much dissected in narrow, acute straps which are less narrow in the basal leaves.

- Flowers light-blue, surrounded with the involucral straps long, thin, green and much longer than the sepals : involucre similar to the leaves surrounding the flower. A petal is reduced to a nectary.

- Fruit : globose capsule, smooth, compound with 5 carpels joined each other until the base of the 5 persistent styles at the top of the fruit and more or less recurved. Seed wrinkled.

- Rare in crops. There is an alkaloid in the seeds : damascene, antispasm. Toxic plant.

- Biological type: annual.
