- Cotyledons elliptic to ovate, rounded tip, more or less stalked.
- First leaf rhomboidal, broad, obtuse at the base; the later 3-foliolate.
- Height: 10-40 cm. Plant sparsely hairy.
- Stem erect angular.
- Leaves with leaflets longer than broad, slightly glaucous beneath. In the upper part with more or less sharp teeth. Stipules toothed at the base.
- Flowers white in raceme lengthening into a small filament. Calyx present during the growth of the fruit. Standard longer than the wings.
- Fruit: obtuse and rounded tip, furrowless on the outer border. Prominent veins like very closed concentric semi-circles. Green when ripe.
- Risk of confusion with other species of Melilotus and Medicago before flowering.
