- Cotyledons elliptical spoon shaped.

- Entire leaves, lanceolate, more or less dentate.


Adult plant snapshot Adult plant:

- Height: 20-50 cm.

- Stem erect generally hairy, hispid.

- Leaves sinuate-wavy oblong or lanceolate, the lower ones attached to petiole, the upper leaves sessile hispid with straight hair, clasped halfway up the stem.

- Flowers with pale blue corolla, flattened, in whorl with short tube, sepals with straight silky threads. Inflorescence in 2 terminal scorpioid cymes.

- Fruits, indehiscent with very hard wall (pericarp); it contains only one seed. Fruits ovate concave, fleshy, brown, shiny, reticulate.

-Roots provide red dye.

- Biological type: annual.
