- Cotyledons invisible (hypogeal germination).
- Leaves pinnately divided.
- Height: 30-100 cm. Plant hairy.
- Stem climbing, narrow-winged.
- Leaf with petiole shorter than the leaflets, angular and ending in a branched tendril. 2 lengthened and acute leaflets per leaf.
- Flowers light-purple then blue, rarely white, solitary or 2-3. Flowering branches much longer than the leaf.
- Fruit : linear pod, hairy, each hair with a small basal wart. Fruit slightly swollen and keel -like. Seeds globose, grey-brown, warty and rough.
- Rare in crops.
- Risk of confusion with Lathyrus tuberosus L. (before flowering).
