- Cotyledons elliptical to ovate, with rounded tip, more or less petiolate, lanceolate, entire leaves, more or less dentate.
- Height: 8-50 cm.
- Stem flowered erect or ascending, slightly branched, covered with persistent hairs, with principal developed root.
- Leaves pale green, covered with small persistent hairs, attenuated at base and towards top. Leaves oblong, lanceolate, rough, with one vein. Cauline leaves sessile.
- White flowers in slightly curved raceme. Calyx strigose with hairs with narrow division and pointed at top. Corolla covered with hair on outside not inside. Stamens fastened towards the base of corolla.
- Fruits brownish, roughly covered by small tubers or projections, increasingly distal at maturity, with 4 pointed parts towards top.
- Red coloured matter produced by external part of plant is used like paint or to colour butter.
