- Cotyledons elliptic to ovate, rounded tip, more or less stalked.
- Leaves entire, lanceolate, more or less toothed.
- Height: 30-90 cm. Plant glabrous.
- Stem erect, branched, smooth.
- Leaves divided, pinnate except in their upper part, lobes ovate, lengthened or narrow. Leaves glabrous or somewhat glaucous, clasping the stem with 2 lobes rounded and sometimes acute. White latex.
- Flowers purplish-blue or blue or reddish rarely white, rays (1-3 cm broad), heads in terminal spreading corymb. Small scales at the base of the head.
- Fruit : achene black when ripe, with fine ribs on each face, abruptly tapered into a beak bearing a white pappus of simple, toothed not feathery hairs.
- Plant ornamental. Young seedlings eaten as green salad.
- Rare in crops.
