- Cotyledons elongate, spoonlike.
- Leaves entire, elliptic to ovate, entire-margined.
- Height: 20-80 cm. Plant very variable.
- Stem with basal tufts of hairs, glabrous above, few-branched, erect.
- Leaves: lower in rosette, entire, toothed or pinnatifid with lanceolate segments. Middle leaves opposite semi-amplexicaule, grey-green, dull, pinnatisect.
- Flowers pink or lilac, 50-80 in head 20-40 mm broad. Involucre of 12-16 lanceolate bracts. Involucel hairy with 4-angled. Calyx surrounded with 8 erect teeth. Corolla unequally 4-lobed.
- Fruit : achene 5-6 mm, with dense upwardly directed hairs.
- Plant ornamental. Leaves and flowers depurative, bitter, detergent,expectorant and astringent.Rare in crops.
