- Plant propagates vegetatively (rhizomes...); establishment from seedling is rare.
- Shoot rolled, leaf sheath terete.
- Leaf blade 20-50 times longer than broad, leaf more or less hairy.
- Ligule membranous, truncate, no auricles, basal tufts of hairs on each side of the leaf blade.
- Height: 50-150 cm.
- Leaf with a long narrow blade (4-18 mm), hairy at the base with a white midrib, narrowed near the base and ending into a point. Long-haired basal blade. Sheath smooth, upper sheath short and frayed.
- Inflorescence : 20 cm x 2-3 cm, covered with dense silvery hairs, in spike. Spikelets sessile or with a marked pedicel. 2 equal glumes exceeding flowers, with long white hairs on its base and back (silky panicle ).
- Fruit : caryopsis, enclosed into 3 thin floral-glumes and 2 stiff glumes. The seed is the shedding spikelet.
- Plant psammophilous.
- Rare in crops.
