- Plant propagates mostly vegetatively (rhizomes...); establishment from seedling is rare.
- Height: 50-150 cm, spreading or ascending, 4-angled, with a rapid lengthening, smooth, slightly swollen at the nodes.
- Leaves : 4-5 leaves in the first whorl, then 6-8 in later whorls. Leaves relatively short, oblong or lanceolate -linear, mucronate, thick, only one very prominent vein on the back.
- Flowers white, small (3mm), very numerous in cyme. Cyme relatively narrow, oblong, slightly dense, with more or less erect branches. Corolla with awned lobes.
- Fruit on erect pedicel, relatively big, glabrous, 2-celled, punctate.
- Plant used in the past as cheese-rennet. A dye was extracted from rhizomes.
- Rare in crops.
- Risk of confusion at seedling stage with the other species of Galium except Galium aparine L. (hooking plant).
