- Cotyledons auriculate.
- Leaves entire, elliptic-ovate, regularly dentate.
- Height: 10-80 cm. Plant very variable.
- Stem branched, usually pubescent, 4-angled, not swollen at nodes, with spreading or ascending branches.
- Leaves opposite, stalked, narrow, lanceolate, weakly veined, 3-7 relatively large teeth on each border. Hairy petioles. Pinnately veined.
- Flowers in axillary pseudo-whorls. Calyx campanulate, greenish, 10-veined and 5 equal teeth ending in a bristle spine 4-6 mm long. Corolla purple, scarcely white, upper lip helmet-shaped, erect. Lower lip 3-lobed, median lobe longer than broad and the largest.
- Fruit : 4-achene ovoid, 3 mm x 2 mm.
- Plant used for catarrh and in the past against phtisis.
- Risk of confusion with Galeopsis angustifolia Ehrh. ex Hoffm.
