- Cotyledons cordate at the apex.
- Leaves divided.
- Height: 20-70 cm. Plant with a robust root.
- Stem rough in the lower part (short and whitish hairs).
- Leaves lower in rosette. Leaves hairy or glabrous 100-150 mm x 40-60 mm, pinnatisect with 5-7 ovate -elongate lobes on each side of the midvein. Cauline leaves with lobes clasping the stem.
- Flowers bright-yellow in ebracteate raceme. Sepals spreading and horizontal.
- Fruit : erect siliqua, straight or slightly sickle-like upward, linear (30-40 x 1.5 mm). Seeds ovate-elongate, somewhat flattened, red-brown, smooth (1.3 x 0.7 mm).
- Plant melliferous. In Hungary the seeds are used as condiment. Rare in crops. Plant protected in Poitou-Charentes (decree 19/04/88).[France].
