Seedling:
- Shoot rolled, leaf sheath terete.
- Leaf blade circa 10 times longer than wide, leaf more or less hairy.
- Ligule surrounded with a ring of hairs, auricles absent, basal tufts of hairs on each side of the leaf blade.
- Height: 10-50 cm. Plant tufted with a fibrous root.
- Stems geniculate -ascending, simple or branched at the base.
- Leaves lower with dissymetrical teeth. Later leaves with a narrow blade, parallel margins, glabrous and not warty on borders. Lower node of the panicle with several whorled and distant branches. No gland on margins.
- Inflorescence : not branched. Spikelets 1 mm broad with 4-15 florets on 2 rows.
- Fruits : Caryopsis furrowless on the opposite side of the scutellum. Lemma 1 to 1.5 mm.
- Rare in crops.
