- Shoot rolled, leaf sheath terete.
- Leaf blade circa 10 times longer than broad, leaf more or less hairy.
- Ligule surrounded with a ring of hairs, auricles absent, basal tufts of hairs on each side of the leaf blade.
- Height: 10-50cm. Plant tufted with a fibrous root.
- Stem erect ascending, simple.
- Leaves glabrous or sparcely hairy, denticulate, with non tuberous margins.
- Inflorescence : very loose panicle, lower node with some spikes but not whorled. Solitary branches even at the base. No gland. Small axillary inflorescence at each leaf blade. Spikelets 1.5 mm broad, longer than the pedicel, not fascicled, linear with densely closed florets. Small prominent or enclosed panicle at the tip of the sheath. Glumes lanceolate, floral glume obtuse.
- Fruits : naked and oblong caryopsis.
- Rare in crops.
- Risk of confusion with: at seedling stage with the other species of Eragrostis .
